Something I noticed is, in order to make onboarding easy, lot of assumptions get built-in. So PoC seems easy enough but no thought put into easy conversion further down.
We tend to think of PLG in terms of SaaS. Curious to hear what you think of Tesla? It’s a great example of PLG. Things are built into the product to continue to sell. Example : heated seats. All I had to do was click buy when my kids guilt-tricked me.
1) As you noted, PLG in non-SaaS products is a real thing! It seems common now for physical products (including vehicles, wearables, IoT devices) to have additional features packaged as upsells. While personally, I don't love physical devices being tied to software in order for them to minimally function, I can see the appeal from a business PoV.
2) The role of PLG in SaaS products beyond the initial onboarding flow is something I didn't talk about in this post but I totally should have! Adding incremental features that users can opt into and pay for as they adopt the product is such a value-add to the business.

Apologies Veena for the very delayed response!
